  Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has continued his series of consultations with key leaders from across the region, engaging with former Members of Parliament (MPs) and former Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) to discuss the way forward for the country as it heads into 2024.
The meetings, held over the festive season, have provided a platform for leaders to share their perspectives on the current political and social landscape, reflect on past challenges, and explore possible solutions for the future. Gachagua described these consultations as both insightful and educational, helping to clarify the road ahead for Kenya.
Among those Gachagua met were former MPs Hon. Peter Mwathi, Hon. Jude Njomo, Hon. Wainanina Jungle, Hon. Ngunjiri Wambugu, Hon. Gichuhi Mwangi, and Hon. Kabinga Wathayu.   A notorious mobile phone snatcher, infamous for using a motorcycle to steal phones from unsuspecting passersby, was arrested by detectives from the Mombasa Regional Headquarters on Monday. The suspect, Ian Mahad, also known as Suleiman, has been a major thorn in the side of residents in the Bamburi, Nyali, and Kadzandani areas, where he carried out a series of daring thefts.
The arrest followed a determined operation by law enforcement officers who had been tracking the gang responsible for the criminal activities. Mahad was apprehended at a motorcycle shop in Mombasa’s central business district, where he had been seen purchasing a new bike. The arrest was a direct consequence of the mounting pressure from locals, some of whom had taken matters into their own hands. On Saturday, enraged residents set fire to Mahad’s previous motorcycle after he used it to carry out another phone-snatching spree in the area.
Following his arrest, detectives expanded their operation to the Kadzandani area, a known hideout for members of the gang. There, they recovered a Honda motorcycle with the registration number KMGG 228X, an Oppo mobile phone, and other items linked to the gang’s illegal activities. However, not all members of the criminal group were apprehended. Several suspects managed to evade capture and remain at large, prompting the police to intensify their search.
Mahad is currently in police custody, undergoing processing, and is expected to be arraigned in court soon. Local authorities have vowed to continue their crackdown on criminal gangs in Mombasa and its environs, ensuring that those responsible for terrorizing innocent citizens are brought to justice.
The successful arrest marks a significant victory for law enforcement, and a much-needed relief for the residents of Bamburi, Nyali, and Kadzandani, who have long suffered from the actions of this gang.    Police are investigating a strange incident in Mukuku, Nduluku, Mbooni East, Makueni County, where a high-density metallic object fell from the sky. Witnesses reported hearing a loud, unusual sound before the partially burnt object crashed into a field this morning. Local authorities, along with experts from the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, have secured the area and are working to determine the object’s origin, with initial speculation suggesting it could be debris from a satellite or aircraft.No injuries or further damage have been reported, and investigations are ongoing. Uasin Gishu County Assembly Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have strongly condemned the recent wave of abductions in Kenya, calling for swift action against those responsible and urging respect for leaders.
Led by Ngenyilel Ward MCA Benjamin Natui, the MCAs expressed concern over the disturbing trend of abductions, asserting that such actions must be halted. “We will not allow these abductions to continue. Those responsible should be arrested and face the full force of the law,” Natui said. He also appealed to the youth to show respect towards leaders, cautioning against the use of offensive language and behavior, particularly on social media. “It’s unacceptable to see a photo of our president in a coffin. Such actions are not in line with our traditions and values. As youth, let’s discipline ourselves, use social media positively, and avoid disrespecting others, especially our leaders,” Natui added.
Simat Kapseret Ward MCA Moses Kebenei echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that it is wrong for the government to abduct young people. He insisted that if any youth commit a crime, they should be arrested and subjected to due process in the courts of law. “The government must respect the legal process. If someone is guilty of an offense, they should face the law, but abductions are not the solution. It’s important that those found guilty of cybercrimes or any criminal act are prosecuted,” Kebenei stated.
Kebenei also urged parents to be vigilant in caring for their children, encouraging them to raise their children with discipline and respect for the law. He emphasized the importance of constructive criticism, urging the public to engage in positive discourse with the government and leaders. “As citizens, we have a right to hold our leaders accountable, but it’s important that we criticize them positively. The 2026 election is fast approaching, and it will be a time for leaders to show their scorecards,” he said.
The MCAs also addressed the role of social media in shaping public opinion, urging users not to indulge in negative criticism or hate speech. “Kenya is a democratic nation with an open internet. Unlike some countries, such as Uganda, where the government controls the internet, our democracy thrives on the free exchange of ideas. Let’s protect our democracy and avoid using the internet for divisive purposes,” Kebenei concluded.
Regarding the ongoing demonstrations, the MCAs called for peaceful protests, urging the youth to follow proper procedures and obtain permits before taking to the streets. “We must protest in a way that does not harm people or destroy property. Let’s avoid vandalism and ensure that our actions remain peaceful,” Natui added.
The leaders thanked President William Ruto for his commitment to stopping abductions, expressing hope that the government would take swift action to address the issue and ensure the safety of all citizens.

The protest, which aimed to draw attention to the rising cases of forced disappearances, saw hundreds of demonstrators march through the streets, calling for justice and the release of abducted youths.The protest quickly turned dramatic when police officers apprehended Kigame and several protesters, frog-marching them to the Central Police Station. Eyewitnesses watched as the group was escorted to the station, while officers removed the protest placards, effectively halting the peaceful demonstration.At the police station, the arrested protesters were briefly detained for about 20 minutes before being released with a stern warning. Authorities insisted the protest had not been sanctioned, citing security concerns as the reason for the intervention. A senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, emphasized that the protest had not been pre-notified, and therefore, the police had no obligation to provide security or an escort.Kigame, speaking to the media at Nandi Garden later in the day, condemned the police action, insisting that their demonstration did not require a permit.
