Uasin Gishu Parents Demand Refunds in Finland and Canada Education Scandal, Call for President Ruto’s Intervention

Over 300 parents from Uasin Gishu County are calling for urgent intervention from President William Ruto to resolve a long-standing education scandal involving the Uasin Gishu Overseas Education Trust. These parents, who paid large sums of money for their children to pursue studies in Finland and Canada, are demanding refunds after their children were denied the opportunity to study abroad.
The scandal began in 2021, when parents deposited substantial amounts of money into a trust fund, believing it would secure their children’s education abroad. However, despite the large sums collected—amounting to over Ksh. 837 million between May 2021 and December 2022—the promised scholarships to Finland and Canada never materialized for many students.
Julius Rono, a parent from Ziwa, sold four and a half acres of land worth over four million shillings to pay for his children’s education abroad. “We paid our money in 2022, and to this day, our children have not gone to study. We are suffering, and no one is listening to us. It’s painful to see leaders living luxurious lives while we are struggling,” Rono said, his frustration evident.
He added that although former Governor Jackson Mandago was in charge when the payments were made, Governor Jonathan Bii has inherited the issue, and neither has addressed the parents’ concerns. “Where are we headed? We want our money back. Our children are still at home, and our lives have been ruined,” Rono continued.
Other parents, like Christopher Rotich, are also speaking out. “It’s heartbreaking that people who stole our money are now claiming we have been refunded. We are still waiting, and the leaders are silent. Eldoret has become a city of scams. Where is MP Oscar Sudi? Where is the government?” Rotich said.
Celina Cherono, whose child was supposed to study nursing in Finland, took out a loan of Ksh. 1.5 million to cover the fees. “I paid one million shillings for my child’s studies, and now, I am stuck with a bank loan that has ballooned to Ksh. 2.3 million. My child is sick and has been hospitalized for weeks,” she said. Cherono is now asking the county government to refund the money, as she continues to sell her property to meet financial obligations.
Noah Kemboi, another parent, emphasized the desperation of over 300 families who are now seeking redress. “We have been following this issue for three years. Now we are being tossed to court, and after winning cases, the accused appeal. We need action, not delays,” Kemboi said.
The Uasin Gishu Overseas Education Trust, which was supposed to manage the funds for the students’ tuition in Finland and Canada, opened a bank account in March 2021 with three officials—Joseph Maritim, Joshua Lelei, and Meshack Rono—named as signatories. Between May 2021 and December 2022, the account received a total of Ksh. 837,855,889 from parents. The funds were intended to cover the tuition and fees of students studying at various institutions abroad, but many parents claim that the money was never paid to the institutions, leaving their children stranded.
The parents are now appealing to President William Ruto to intervene and help recover their funds. “We are suffering. We took loans and sold our property to send our children abroad for a better future. We are asking President Ruto to address this issue and help us get our money back,” Celina Cherono pleaded.
In addition to appealing to the president, the parents are also calling for justice through the courts. “We want the Chief Justice, Martha Koome, to look into the courts in Eldoret. We have been following up on this for years, and the delays are affecting our lives,” said Kemboi.
As the New Year approaches, the parents are hopeful that President Ruto will address the matter in his New Year’s Eve speech, shedding light on the issue and offering a solution to the ongoing crisis. The parents’ collective plea is clear: they want their money refunded, and they want to see justice done for their children’s lost education opportunities.
With the education trust under scrutiny and the local leaders facing increasing pressure, many in Eldoret are watching closely to see whether the government will act to resolve what has become a painful chapter for over 300 families in the region.  Read More

Ngenyilel MCA Benjamin Natui Pledges to Improve Water Access with Ongoing and Future Projects

By Wasike Elvis Benjamin Natui, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Ngenyilel Ward, has outlined his plans to enhance access to clean water for residents in the area, citing it as a top priority for the upcoming year. Speaking to residents and stakeholders, MCA Natui shared a comprehensive update on water projects undertaken in 2024 and highlighted future plans for 2025, promising significant improvements in the lives of local families. When Natui first took office, clean water access was a major challenge for many households in Ngenyilel. However, he emphasized that substantial progress has been made. This year, over 70 percent of the ward’s budget was dedicated to addressing the water crisis, ensuring that essential water projects were not only initiated but completed. Five water projects were successfully carried out in different parts of the ward, benefiting hundreds of households. Natui explained that the focus was on completing fewer projects but ensuring they were fully funded and finished, with each project costing at least Sh 5 million.”Water is a fundamental need, and we made it our priority. This year, we invested heavily to make sure the water projects we started were completed,” said Natui. “In the coming year, we will continue with this focus and expand our efforts. We are planning to build five more water projects, ensuring that every part of the ward will have reliable access to clean water.”The MCA also acknowledged the support from local leaders and residents, noting that the positive feedback and successful implementation of the current water projects serve as a testament to the effectiveness of prioritizing essential community needs. He further assured the public that the water projects will continue to be a central focus of the development agenda for 2025.In addition to water initiatives, MCA Natui highlighted other key development projects for 2025. He reaffirmed his commitment to education by increasing the bursary fund from Sh 6 million in 2024 to Sh 8 million in 2025, aimed at helping students from low-income backgrounds continue their education. The bursary increase will provide much-needed relief for many families in the ward, ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent talented students from pursuing their studies.“We believe that investing in education is investing in the future of our children. Next year, the bursary fund will be increased to Sh 8 million to support even more students who need financial help to continue their education,” Natui added. The MCA also emphasized the continued development of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) facilities. In 2024, Sh 10 million was allocated to building and improving ECDE centers, with a focus on completing unfinished projects. “We are committed to ensuring that our children have access to a conducive learning environment from an early age. The ECDE projects will continue, and we will ensure that every school is equipped with the necessary resources,” said Natui.Another notable initiative is the “Inua Mama na Kuku” program, which seeks to empower women by providing them with chickens for income generation. For 2025, Natui has allocated Sh 3 million to further support women in the ward, enabling them to start poultry farming and improve their livelihoods.“We are committed to empowering women, and this program is one of the ways we are helping them build sustainable sources of income. In 2025, we will give out chicks to women, ensuring that they have the tools they need to thrive,” Natui explained.Furthermore, Natui emphasized the importance of infrastructural development and ensuring that all projects are completed in a timely and efficient manner. “Our approach is simple: we focus on a few projects but make sure they are well-funded and completed. This ensures that the community sees real, lasting results,” he said.  Read More

Kenya Wild Service warn illegal Entry of Tsavo East National Park

By Grace Waithaka The KWS has expressed deep concern over an incident involving illegal entry into Tsavo East National Park on Sunday, December 29, 2024. During a routine patrol at Yakalicha, 16 kilometers inside the park, KWS officers encountered over 30 armed herders who had trespassed into the protected area.A confrontation ensued when the herders attacked the officers with poisoned arrows, advancing aggressively. Tragically, one herder lost their life during the incident, and one officer narrowly escaped injury after being grazed by a poisoned arrow stuck to their firearm. KWS extended its condolences to the family of the deceased herder and emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence between the Service and local communities. The matter has been reported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices in Mutomo, Kitui County, and Garsen, Tana River County, where investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. KWS is fully cooperating with the DCI in the investigation.Over the past year, KWS has faced increasing hostility along the northeastern boundary of Tsavo East National Park. This tension has been fueled by incitement from Hon. Guyo Ali Wario, the Member of Parliament for Garsen Constituency, who has allegedly encouraged illegal invasions into the park with promises of land acquisition. This has led to the illegal construction of makeshift settlements, armed herding of thousands of livestock in protected areas, and significant threats to wildlife, KWS personnel, and the environment. In November 2024, the escalating tension culminated in the burning of a police station and the displacement of a KWS security base at Kalalani inside South Kitui National Reserve. This act endangered public safety, property security, and wildlife protection.Despite these challenges, KWS remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence. The Service has engaged local communities through meetings with elders, government administrators, and local leaders, which have yielded improved relations. In response to community needs, KWS has also undertaken Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, such as drilling boreholes for water and constructing classrooms to enhance educational opportunities for the park-adjacent Kone community.KWS reiterated that illegal entry into national parks is a criminal offense under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, Cap 376. Armed incursions into protected areas pose severe risks to law enforcement officers, wildlife, and the public. The Service strongly condemned the actions of Hon. Guyo Ali Wario, whose incitement has heightened tensions and contributed to this tragic event. KWS urged all communities to respect protected areas and work collaboratively to ensure the safety of wildlife, rangers, and local residents.KWS reaffirmed its dedication to conserving Kenya’s wildlife heritage while promoting peaceful coexistence with neighboring communities.  Read More

Shameful and Sexist, KEWOTA Condemns the Misuse of Women’s Bodies in Social Media Propaganda

By John Kariuki The Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) has issued a blistering condemnation of the sexist and degrading caricatures currently circulating on social media. These doctored images exploit women’s bodies without consent, reducing them to tools of propaganda in a manner that is both shameful and inhumane. The explicit caricatures, often depicting half-naked women, are purportedly being used to criticize the alleged abductions linked to state actions. However, instead of addressing the issues at hand, these images perpetuate a culture of disrespect, sexism, and objectification. They trivialize the dignity of women and expose them to public ridicule, all while ignoring the consent and rights of those depicted.KEWOTA CEO Benter Opande minced no words in her criticism:> “This vile act of circulating images that demean and exploit women is an attack on our dignity and humanity. Women’s bodies are not tools for political games or vendettas. Such behavior is repugnant, sexist, and completely unacceptable.”These images do more than insult women; they poison society by normalizing disrespect. Children are being exposed to this filth, consuming content that teaches them to associate women with negativity, objectification, and ridicule. This is a moral crisis that demands urgent action.KEWOTA further criticized the creators and disseminators of these caricatures for their cowardice and malice. Hiding behind anonymity, they have unleashed a wave of digital violence targeting women, a move that speaks volumes about their lack of decency and humanity.“It is abhorrent that in this day and age, women are still being reduced to objects of mockery and political tools. This is not freedom of expression; it’s an abuse of freedom,” Opande asserted.KEWOTA is demanding immediate intervention from authorities, social media platforms, and civil society organizations to curb this online misogyny. They are also calling for legal action against the perpetrators of this digital violence. The association emphasized that women must not always be associated with negativity and scapegoated for societal frustrations. Instead, they should be accorded the respect and dignity they deserve as equal members of society.“This behavior reflects the worst of our society. Women’s rights are human rights, and we will not stand idly by while they are trampled upon,” Opande concluded. This is a call to action for every Kenyan to reject these dehumanizing acts and stand against the normalization of sexism and digital violence. Women deserve better, and it is high time society stops weaponizing their bodies for personal or political gain.  Read More
