Nine people lost their lives in a tragic road accident along the Kitale-Eldoret Road near Soy, Uasin Gishu County, on Friday morning. The collision involved a canter lorry carrying pipes and a matatu traveling from Kitale to Eldoret.
According to Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi, the accident occurred when the lorry, which was reportedly carrying heavy pipes, lost control and veered into the path of the matatu. The two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in the death of all nine passengers in the matatu.

Emergency responders were quickly on the scene, but the victims, tragically, were declared dead on arrival.
Commander Mwanthi has urged drivers to exercise caution, especially during the festive season, to prevent further accidents. “It is crucial for all road users to adhere to traffic safety regulations and remain vigilant to ensure that people reach their destinations safely,” he said.

Eldoret-based Human Rights Activist Calls for Responsible Use of Social Media

In a statement issued today, renowned Eldoret-based human rights activist Kipkorir Ngetich expressed deep concern over the growing trend of abuse, insults, and false propaganda circulating on social media platforms, particularly targeting His Excellency President William Ruto, his office, and his family. Ngetich cautioned that the right to freedom of speech should not be used as a license for harmful and destructive behavior.
“It is shocking to witness how the democratic space has been misused to attack our leaders, their families, and the very institutions that hold our country together,” said Ngetich. “What we are seeing now goes beyond the benefits of free speech and is becoming a serious threat to national unity and social harmony.”
The activist emphasized that the social media, once seen as a powerful tool for communication and information sharing, has now been hijacked by certain politicians who sponsor hate, lies, and insults. According to Ngetich, the unchecked spread of false information on these platforms is undermining the dignity of the President, his family, and the country at large.
“This is no longer about freedom of speech. It is an organized campaign of propaganda and hatred designed to destabilize our society. Social media has become a breeding ground for criminal activities, including human trafficking, drug abuse, terrorism, and even cybercrimes,” Ngetich warned.
He further expressed concern about the impact this environment is having on the younger generation, who are exposed to harmful content, including pornography, hate speech, and online shaming of teachers and public figures. “The kind of behavior we are witnessing is setting a dangerous precedent for our youth, who are growing up in an environment that promotes disrespect, rebellion, and criminal activity,” Ngetich stated.
Ngetich also criticized the lack of action from the relevant authorities, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). “It is unacceptable that social media criminals are still not being held accountable. These institutions must rise to the occasion and ensure that the law is enforced to protect the rights and dignity of all Kenyans,” he said.
In his statement, Ngetich urged the Kenyan Parliament to take swift action and introduce stronger laws that would make it expensive for individuals to spread lies, insults, and propaganda on social media without facing consequences. He emphasized the importance of responsible use of social media and the need to preserve the values of discipline, respect, and good ethics in Kenyan society.
“It is critical that we protect the integrity of the office of the President, regardless of who holds it. What we are seeing now is not just an attack on President Ruto but on the very fabric of our democracy,” Ngetich concluded. “We must ensure that future generations grow up in a society where freedom of speech is respected, but also responsibly exercised.”
The activist’s call comes at a time when the country grapples with increasing cases of misinformation and hate speech on social media platforms. Ngetich’s statement is a reminder that the rights to freedom of expression must be balanced with responsibility and respect for others’ rights.  Read More
