Uasin Gishu Nurses Go on Strike Over Unresolved CBA Agreement and Employment Issues

  By Wasike Elvis
Nurses in Uasin Gishu County have gone on strike, citing the county government’s refusal to engage in discussions for a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The strike, which began on December 23, 2024, has now entered its fifth day, paralyzing healthcare services across the region.
The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Secretary for Uasin Gishu County, Klein Kimutai, expressed frustration with the county administration, accusing it of neglecting the concerns of nurses despite several attempts to resolve issues through dialogue. According to Kimutai, the Ministry of Labour has intervened, inviting both the county government and the union for negotiations, but the county has indicated that it will not be available for discussions until December 7, 2025. As a result, the strike will continue indefinitely until the issues are addressed.
“The nurses are not happy with the county government’s refusal to address our concerns, particularly concerning promotions. Many of us have been stagnated in our positions for years, while new recruits are being placed in higher job groups. Some of us have been serving for over ten years, with only one promotion during the Kenyatta administration. This is not acceptable,” Kimutai said.
The nurses are also demanding that the county government honor its commitment to promotions. There were funds allocated for promotion, but union representatives allege that some individuals are attempting to misappropriate the money. Additionally, they are calling for the employment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) staff, who have been on contract since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, to be confirmed on permanent and pensionable terms. The nurses argue that without permanent employment, UHC staff face career stagnation, which they believe hampers their professional development and the quality of healthcare services.
Sharon Jepchirchir, a UHC staff member, shared her personal struggle, stating that many of her colleagues are facing depression due to the lack of job security. “We have been working for five years under contract, and yet we are still not confirmed as permanent employees. It is a very frustrating situation, and some of us are overworked and underpaid. We deserve better,” Jepchirchir said, adding that a budget of just 4 billion shillings is needed to absorb the UHC staff into permanent and pensionable positions.
Another UHC worker, Koech Kiprop, who was employed in 2020, also spoke out about the dire situation. “We have suffered a lot. We were employed in 2020, but our conditions have not improved. We will not return to work until the governor confirms our permanent status,” Kiprop said.
The strike has led to the complete paralysis of healthcare services in Uasin Gishu, with hospitals and health centers unable to provide essential care. The nurses have made it clear that they will not return to work until their demands for fair promotions, permanent employment, and salary adjustments are met.
The nurses’ call for action has been echoed by union representatives, who insist that the county government must address the issues promptly to avoid further disruption of healthcare services. “We are asking Governor Jonathan Bii to prioritize our concerns. We want our jobs to be secure, and we want to be treated fairly. This is not just about money; it’s about our dignity as healthcare workers,” Kimutai concluded.
As the strike continues, the county government will have to decide how to address the concerns of the nurses and restore healthcare services to Uasin Gishu County.  Read More

A Journey of Resilience and Hope: Daniel Kipsanga’s Life-Changing Battle Against Spinal Degeneration

The story of Daniel Kipsanga, a dedicated teacher from Kilgoris, is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the life-changing impact of exceptional healthcare. After years of suffering from an excruciating spinal condition, Daniel’s life was transformed thanks to the expert care of Dr. Florentius Koech at Mediheal Hospital. His journey from debilitating pain to hope serves as an inspiration to many, demonstrating the power of perseverance and compassionate medical care.
In 2017, Daniel began experiencing severe pain in his waist, which quickly worsened to the point where he could no longer walk, sleep, or carry out basic daily tasks. As the pain intensified, Daniel found himself trapped in a cycle of frustration and fear. Despite seeking treatment from various hospitals, no diagnosis or relief came, leaving him feeling helpless.
After months of debilitating pain, Daniel was referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, where he was informed that his condition was too advanced to treat effectively. The news was devastating: surgery was possible, but his chances of recovery were slim. Refusing to give up, Daniel sought another opinion and was admitted to Mediheal Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a serious spinal cord issue that required urgent and complex surgery.
Dr. Florentius Koech, a renowned expert in spinal surgeries, took on Daniel’s case. Following extensive testing and evaluation, Daniel underwent a major spinal surgery. While the surgery was initially successful, the relief was short-lived, as the pain soon returned. A second surgery was performed, followed by more procedures to address the ongoing deterioration of his spine.
Dr. Koech explained that Daniel’s condition was especially complicated due to an inherited connective tissue disorder, which caused the degeneration of his bones and joints. “His spine, though repaired multiple times, continued to degenerate. Each surgery helped, but as one level was fixed, the next would deteriorate,” Dr. Koech explained. Over the years, Daniel underwent more than five surgeries in an effort to slow the progression of his condition.
Despite the repeated setbacks, Daniel never lost hope. His journey was filled with hardship and pain, but he remained determined to reclaim his life. “I couldn’t walk, sleep, or even move without pain. It was a dark time in my life, and I had no idea if things would ever get better,” Daniel recalls, reflecting on the toughest moments of his battle.
Today, Daniel’s condition has significantly improved. While he still deals with joint pain due to his inherited condition, his spine is in much better shape, and he is able to live a more comfortable and active life. He credits Dr. Koech’s expertise and compassion for his recovery. “Dr. Koech doesn’t just think about the money; he genuinely cares about his patients’ well-being. I’m finally feeling better, and I’m deeply grateful for everything he’s done for me,” Daniel said.
Although Daniel’s journey continues, his outlook is bright. “The road has been long and difficult, but I am confident that with Dr. Koech’s help, I will continue to improve,” he adds.
Daniel’s story serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the critical role of healthcare professionals who go above and beyond for their patients. It highlights the importance of perseverance, faith, and expert care, which together can lead to remarkable recovery, even in the face of life-threatening conditions.
At Tophill Hospital, we remain committed to providing compassionate and comprehensive care to all our patients, understanding the emotional, physical, and mental toll health challenges can take. Daniel’s journey is a powerful example of the life-changing impact that dedicated medical care and a patient’s resilience can have.
As Daniel expresses his gratitude, he says, “Thank you to Dr. Koech and the entire team at Tophill Hospital. Your dedication and care have made all the difference in my life. I pray that God continues to bless you for the work you do.”
This incredible story serves as an inspiration to others facing similar health battles, showing that no matter how difficult the road may seem, there is always hope, and with the right care, recovery is possible. Success Story: Eli Mwanza’s Remarkable Journey to Recovery at Tophill Hospital

Eli Mwanza, a 70-year-old patient from Mumias, Kakamega County, has defied the odds after years of suffering from debilitating back pain, thanks to the expert care he received at Tophill Hospital. Eli’s inspiring journey from severe pain to recovery highlights the importance of seeking the right medical treatment and trusting in the expertise of healthcare professionals.
Eli first began experiencing discomfort in his lower back in January 2022. What initially seemed like mild pain soon escalated, spreading to the right side of his body. Despite visiting several medical facilities and undergoing numerous X-rays, the pain persisted. Doctors attributed his condition to muscle strain and prescribed painkillers, but the discomfort only worsened over time, making basic tasks such as walking, driving, and even sitting increasingly difficult.
By early 2024, Eli’s condition had reached a breaking point. The pain became so severe that it hindered his ability to perform daily activities. Determined to find a solution, Eli sought advice from friends and family who had experienced similar spinal issues and had found successful treatments at Tophill Hospital in Eldoret. Encouraged by glowing recommendations, Eli decided to visit the hospital in January 2024, hoping for a chance at recovery.
At Tophill, Eli was promptly attended to by the hospital’s expert team. Using advanced medical technology, including a state-of-the-art MRI system, doctors were able to quickly diagnose him with spinal stenosis—a condition where the spinal canal narrows and puts pressure on the nerves, causing excruciating pain. Eli was amazed at how swiftly the diagnosis was made, thanks to the hospital’s modern digital imaging system that transmitted MRI results directly to doctors for rapid interpretation.
Dr. Florentius Koech, the lead surgeon at Tophill, initially recommended surgery but also offered an alternative option—an epidural steroid injection to provide temporary pain relief. Concerned about the emotional and financial implications of surgery, Eli opted for the injection. On February 22, 2024, he underwent the procedure, and the results were immediate. For the first time in months, Eli walked out of the hospital without the assistance of a walking stick.
Despite the initial relief, Dr. Koech warned Eli that the injection’s effects would not be permanent and that surgery might be necessary down the line. Unfortunately, in October 2024, Eli experienced a flare-up of the same debilitating pain after a rough car ride from church. The pain became so severe that he was unable to sit in a vehicle or walk without help. Unable to manage the pain, Eli had to rely on a hired Red Cross ambulance to transport him back to Tophill for a follow-up visit.
A fresh MRI revealed that Eli’s spinal discs had collapsed, leaving surgery as the only viable option to alleviate the pain and restore his mobility. After discussing his options with Dr. Koech, Eli made the decision to proceed with surgery, trusting that it would be the best path to regain his quality of life.
On December 3, 2024, Eli underwent successful spinal decompression surgery at Tophill. Dr. Koech and his team removed part of Eli’s vertebral column to create more space for the nerves and inserted screws to stabilize his spine. Despite his age, Eli’s recovery was nothing short of remarkable. Within 24 hours, he was able to move and walk without assistance, and just three days later, he was discharged from the hospital—pain-free and filled with renewed hope.
Eli expressed his deep gratitude to Dr. Koech and the entire Tophill team for their outstanding care. “Dr. Koech’s service is top-notch,” Eli said. “His care and dedication reminded me of the late Mother Teresa—his compassion and expertise made all the difference in my recovery.”
Eli also praised the staff at Tophill for their exceptional service, including the nurses, administrative team, and kitchen staff. “The nurses here are amazing! They’re truly dedicated to their work and treat every patient with compassion. The food is nutritious, and even the accounts staff are so efficient and friendly. I felt like I was part of a family here,” he shared.
Eli’s journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of seeking the right medical treatment and not giving up in the face of persistent pain. He encourages others to trust their healthcare providers and to seek help when needed. “Don’t be afraid to seek help and go to the right facility. It’s never too late to get the treatment you need to restore your health and live a pain-free life,” Eli said.
Eli also highlighted the role of SHA Insurance in making his surgery more affordable. The insurance provider covered a portion of his surgical costs, and Eli recommends that all Kenyans consider enrolling in SHA Insurance to ensure they have access to quality medical care when needed.
Reflecting on Eli’s case, Dr. Koech commented, “Eli’s symptoms were severe, and his quality of life had deteriorated significantly. Despite his age, we decided to proceed with surgery after confirming the spinal stenosis diagnosis. The results have been extraordinary—Eli is now pain-free and able to walk again, and his recovery is progressing well.”
At Tophill Hospital, we are proud to have played a role in Eli’s remarkable recovery. Our mission is to provide the highest quality of care to our patients and to make a real difference in their lives. As Eli’s story proves, no one should have to live with pain when there is a path to healing and recovery.
We wish Eli continued health and happiness as he moves forward on his journey to full recovery.  Read More
