Babu Owino Claims Government Withdrew His Security Over Protest Support

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, has claimed that the government has withdrawn his official security detail in what he believes is retaliation for his support of the Gen Z-led protests held on June 25, 2025. The demonstrations marked the first anniversary of the deadly 2024 protests against the controversial Finance Bill and were organized to honor those who lost their lives during last year’s unrest.

In a strongly worded statement issued on June 26, Babu Owino condemned the move as an act of political intimidation aimed at silencing leaders who stand with the people. “I stood with the people, not against the nation, but for its future,” he stated. “I exercised my democratic right to protest peacefully against the actions of a government that is failing its citizens. Shortly after, my security was withdrawn.”

Owino framed the decision as more than a personal attack, saying it posed a threat to democracy and civic freedom. “This is not just about me. It’s about every Kenyan who believes in the right to speak out, to assemble, and to be heard. A government that punishes elected leaders for standing with their constituents is not afraid of violence—it is afraid of accountability.”

During the protests in Nairobi, Owino was seen engaging directly with demonstrators, at one point being carried aloft through the crowds in a show of solidarity. The event, which was largely peaceful, included marches, musical performances, and powerful tributes to the young lives lost in 2024. Lawmakers like Owino were celebrated for visibly aligning with the youth-led movement demanding justice, reforms, and transparency in governance.

Despite the security withdrawal, Owino insists he will not be deterred. “I do not fear intimidation. I will not be silenced. Kenyans are my security,” he declared. “The truth cannot be suppressed. The justice movement cannot be stopped. We will not back down.”

The National Police Service and other relevant government agencies have yet to officially respond to the claims. However, the incident has raised serious concerns among political observers and civil society groups, who fear that state resources may be weaponized to punish dissenting voices in Parliament.

Babu Owino has urged fellow lawmakers and the public to stay vigilant and united. He emphasized that elected officials must be accountable to the people, not beholden to those in power.

As tensions remain high following the June 25 commemorative protests, the government’s next steps—and whether similar actions will be taken against other protest-supporting leaders—are being closely watched. The unfolding situation continues to test Kenya’s democratic resilience and the rights of its citizens to protest without fear of political retribution.
