Comedian KK Mwenyewe’s Cause of Death Revealed
Kenya is mourning the sudden death of popular comedian Zakaria Kariuki, better known by his stage name KK Mwenyewe, whose unexpected passing on July 15, 2025, has left fans, friends, and fellow creatives in shock. The 23-year-old comic, famous for his viral impersonations of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, died while undergoing treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.
KK Mwenyewe succumbed to complications related to chronic acidity, a condition he had been battling since 2020. His close friend and fellow comedian Kafengo revealed that KK had experienced persistent stomach issues for several years, which worsened significantly in the months leading up to his death. Despite undergoing treatment at a private facility before being transferred to Kiambu Level 5, his condition deteriorated rapidly.
“Two months ago, the issue became more serious, and a month later, it worsened,” said Kafengo.
Final Moments
On the day of his passing, KK was reportedly conscious, talking, and even joking with friends. He had just completed a scan and was awaiting further medical attention. However, while seated beside Kafengo, KK suddenly went silent. By the time medical personnel responded, he had already passed away.
“We were talking about doing a video together. When I realized he wasn’t responding anymore, it hit me that he had died,” Kafengo recounted during a memorial held at Blue Springs Hotel on July 21.
National Mourning and Tributes
News of his death triggered an outpouring of grief across the country. Political leaders, entertainers, and fans paid glowing tributes to the young star. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was frequently the subject of KK’s impersonations, described him as a “brilliant, respectful and creative” young man who brought joy to millions through satire.
KK’s skits had earned him national acclaim, particularly during the 2022 general elections, when his politically charged humor resonated with many Kenyans seeking light in tense times.
KK Mwenyewe will be laid to rest on July 23 at his family’s home in Gathiroini village, Lari, Kiambu County. Friends and supporters have launched a public appeal to assist his family, especially his aging grandmother, whom KK supported financially.
Though his time was short, KK Mwenyewe’s impact on Kenya’s digital entertainment scene was profound. His wit, humility, and originality made him a beloved figure in homes across the country. He used comedy not just to entertain, but to reflect society’s voice—an effort that cemented his place in Kenya’s comedy history.
As the country bids farewell to one of its brightest young talents, his legacy of laughter, satire, and social commentary will live on.
