Human Rights Activist Kipkorir Ngetich Condemns Abductions and Social Media Misuse in Kenya

Human rights activist Kipkorir Ngetich has strongly condemned the recent wave of abductions and the misuse of social media in Kenya, calling for urgent action to address these issues. In a public statement, Ngetich emphasized that such actions are not only unlawful but also a direct threat to national security and social cohesion.”We wish to condemn in the strongest terms possible the recent wave of abductions. This is unacceptable in any state governed by the rule of law,” said Ngetich. He called on the authorities to swiftly arrest and prosecute individuals suspected of committing crimes, ensuring they face justice in a court of law. Ngetich stressed that the Constitution guarantees both the freedom of expression and the right to security, urging the authorities to uphold these rights while ensuring national safety. The activist also expressed his concern over the growing trend of social media abuse, particularly targeting political leaders and public figures. He condemned the circulating images and posts that purportedly show the death of political leaders, including the president, stating that this was not only immoral but also unlawful. “It is not a democratic right to wish death upon someone or to spread false images of coffins. Such actions are inciteful, hateful, and a misuse of the freedoms we enjoy,” he stated.Ngetich called for a responsible and respectful use of social media, urging youths to understand that freedom of speech comes with responsibility. “We need a respectful generation, not one that uses social media to damage the reputation and integrity of others in the name of freedom of expression,” he added. He also called on the church, legal fraternity, and leaders to unite in condemning this behavior. The human rights advocate highlighted that while the country must defend the rights of expression and speech, these freedoms must be exercised in a way that respects others and upholds the law. He warned that unchecked misuse of social media and continued abductions could lead to chaos and instability, destabilizing the country.”The social media has become a powerful tool, but if not managed responsibly, it can either build or destroy a nation. We are at a point where Kenya must urgently act to prevent further damage,” Ngetich stated. He called for stronger laws to regulate social media and ensure that its power is not abused by criminals or malicious political groups. In his statement, Ngetich also addressed the painful experience of the families of those who have been allegedly abducted, urging the government to take immediate steps to end the practice. He pointed out that the pain experienced by these families is similar to the emotional distress faced by the president and his family, who are also victims of social media attacks.Ngetich concluded his statement by urging the government, parliament, and the public to unite in addressing the twin issues of abductions and social media misuse, stressing the importance of preserving national peace and unity. He emphasized that while the country enjoys democratic freedoms, it is essential that these rights are exercised responsibly, for the good of all Kenyans. As the debate around social media abuse and abductions continues, Ngetich’s call for immediate action resonates as Kenya seeks to find a balance between freedom of expression and national security.  Read More
