JUST IN: Shakahola Massacre Trial Postponed to March 2025 Due to Prosecutor Shortage

The manslaughter trial of suspected Shakahola cult leader Paul Mackenzie and his 94 accomplices has been postponed until March 2025 due to a shortage of prosecutors. The case, originally scheduled for three days this week, was adjourned by a Mombasa Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) requested more time to address the issue. Prosecutor Victor Simbi told the court that the team of seven prosecutors handling the case was unavailable due to transfers and other administrative matters. He informed the court, “I am the only prosecutor available for the entire week.”

JUST IN: 84% of Kenyan Employees Report High Stress Levels, Cigna Study Reveals

A new report from the Cigna International Health Study 2024 reveals that 84% of employees in Kenya are experiencing high levels of stress. While the overall well-being of Kenyans has improved slightly, rising from 50 points in 2023 to 61 points in 2024, financial concerns and the high cost of living remain the primary contributors to stress. The study, which surveyed over 10,000 participants across 11 global markets, evaluated well-being based on eight factors: emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual. The findings indicate that employed women in Kenya experience higher levels of stress than their male counterparts.

The government is set to reserve all tenders valued at less than Kes.1 billion for Kenyan firms to protect them from well-funded foreign companies. This initiative is part of proposed amendments to the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act of 2015, which have been tabled in Parliament. The goal of the proposal is to improve the competitiveness of local firms, which have struggled to compete against foreign companies, particularly Chinese firms, in securing tenders at both national and county government levels. Under the proposed changes, foreign firms will still be eligible for contracts exceeding the Kes.1 billion threshold, but only

JUST IN: Kenyans Urged to Submit Feedback on New Medical Scheme by November 18

The government has agreed to reinstate the previously discontinued comprehensive medical insurance scheme for civil servants and public officers, responding to increasing pressure from various stakeholders. According to draft regulations published by the ministry last week, the scheme will be funded through Treasury allocations and the medical allowances already paid to civil servants. The proposed scheme is part of a broader effort to
