Deplorable Health Status in Nandi County: A Crisis Under Sang’s Leadership

Nandi County is facing a severe healthcare crisis, with health facilities across the region in a state of dysfunction and mismanagement. From the Kapsabet County Referral Hospital to various sub-county facilities, including Kaptumo Hospital in Aldai Constituency, residents are now left to contend with a healthcare system that is failing them on multiple fronts.
The situation at Kaptumo Sub-County Hospital has drawn widespread concern. Described as “outrightly dysfunctional,” the facility is lacking critical infrastructure and basic resources. There is no oxygen support system in place, and the hospital’s sanitation is described as “pathetic,” with no essential medications available for patients. Local residents and medical staff alike have voiced frustration over the poor conditions, which they claim have deteriorated under the current county leadership.
While residents struggle with inadequate healthcare, Governor Stephen Sang’s administration is under fire for its apparent disregard for the needs of the people. Recent reports have revealed that county resources were used to fund a lavish birthday celebration for the governor, with costs reportedly exceeding KSh 20 million. Critics argue that such extravagance in the face of a health crisis reflects misplaced priorities and a lack of accountability from county leadership.
“The health facilities are crumbling, ambulances are non-functional, and the governor is spending millions on personal celebrations. This is a betrayal of the people’s trust,” said Kiprotich Cherargei, the Senator for Nandi County. He emphasized that the resources should have been directed towards improving the county’s healthcare services, which are currently inadequate and unprepared for emergencies.
The state of the county’s ambulance services is equally concerning. Many of the vehicles that are supposed to be used for emergencies are inoperable. Some ambulances are without crucial equipment such as oxygen tanks and appropriate patient beds. In a particularly troubling revelation, it was reported that some ambulances have their windows covered with plastic sheets, further exacerbating the risks for patients being transported to hospitals.
Cherargei has called for immediate action to address the crisis. “The people of Nandi deserve better. We need functional hospitals, properly equipped ambulances, and an accountable leadership that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens,” he said.
The senator has vowed that 2025 will be a turning point for the county, stressing that Nandi residents will no longer tolerate the poor governance that has led to such widespread dysfunction. He has called for a collective effort to restore the health sector and hold those in power accountable for their failures.
With the 2027 elections on the horizon, many in Nandi County are hoping for a new direction—one that will focus on rebuilding the healthcare system and ensuring that county resources are used for the benefit of all, rather than for personal gain. The people of Nandi County now find themselves at a crossroads, looking for leadership that will prioritize their health and well-being above all else.  Read More

Governor Natembeya’s New Year Message

By Wasike Elvis The beginning of a new year is often a time for reflection, to celebrate the good moments and address the challenges we face. Governor George Natembeya of Trans-Nzoia County shared his thoughts on both the promise and the struggles of the past year as he ushered in 2025.
In a heartfelt message, Natembeya expressed his honor in joining the Kitale Club Fraternity to mark its 100 years of existence. “I was privileged to usher in this new year by joining the Kitale Club to celebrate 100 years of its establishment. It is a moment of pride to be part of such a significant occasion, a reminder of how far we have come as a county,” he said. The event, which was a blend of history and celebration, provided a timely opportunity for the community to reflect on the progress and growth of the county.
However, amid the celebrations, Natembeya also took the opportunity to highlight a pressing concern—the rise in abductions of youth in the region. “It is disheartening to see a country fail to protect its people,” the governor lamented. He urged the national security agencies to take urgent action in addressing the alarming trend of disappearances, particularly among young people.
He further appealed for solidarity and compassion for those affected by the abductions. “As we begin this new year, let us keep in our prayers the families who have no idea where their loved ones are. May they find solace and strength, and may we all pray for the safe return of those who are missing,” Natembeya said.
The governor concluded his message with well wishes for the people of Trans-Nzoia and beyond. “I wish you a happy and prosperous 2025. Let us continue to love and support one another, ‘Tuendelee kupendana’ (Let us keep loving each other),” he said, emphasizing the importance of unity and compassion as the county moves into the new year.
With the celebrations behind us, Governor Natembeya’s message serves as both a reminder of our shared history and a call to action to address the critical issues facing the community in the coming year.  Read More
