Nancy Macharia Set for Senior County Job After TSC Exit

Dr. Nancy Macharia, the outgoing Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), has been nominated to chair the Murang’a County Public Service Board. Her nomination was formally announced by the Murang’a County Assembly on June 19, 2025. She is scheduled to appear before the County Assembly committee for vetting on June 27, 2025.

This nomination falls under the guidelines of the County Governments Act and the Public Appointments (County Assemblies Approval) Act, which require nominees for such positions to undergo public scrutiny before appointment. If approved, Dr. Macharia will lead the board responsible for overseeing key human resource functions within Murang’a County’s public service, including recruitment, promotions, and disciplinary matters.

In addition to Dr. Macharia, four other individuals have been nominated to serve on the board. These include Dr. Louis Mwende Musikali, Johnson Kang’ethe Kinyua, and Dr. Brian Lishenga Makamu as members, and Oscar Kimani Gathura as the board’s secretary.

All nominees are expected to present their original academic certificates and clearances from key institutions such as the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Credit Reference Bureau (CRB), along with a valid national ID or passport, during the vetting process.

Dr. Macharia made history in June 2015 by becoming the first woman to be appointed as CEO of the TSC, succeeding Gabriel Lengoiboni. In 2020, her contract was renewed following a competitive process that involved 69 applicants, from which only four were shortlisted for final interviews. Her current term is set to conclude on June 30, 2025, after a decade of service. With her impending exit, the TSC has already advertised the vacancy for the CEO position.

Dr. Macharia’s nomination for the Murang’a County role reflects a common trajectory for top-level public officials in Kenya, who often transition into significant roles at the county level after national service. If confirmed, she will take on a key leadership role in a county increasingly recognized for its economic growth, particularly in agriculture, real estate, and agro-processing.
